Health and the National Health Service (Contemporary Issues in Public Policy)

Health and
Health and the National Health Service (Contemporary Issues in Public Policy)
by John Carrier, Ian Kendall
Publication Date: February 12, 2013

(Visit the Hot New Releases in Health Law list for authoritative information on this product's current rank.)

Review & Description

Reviewing recent healthcare policy in the NHS, this book firmly locates the NHS in the context of the welfare state.

Setting health policy in both an historical and modern context (post-1997) Carrier and Kendall weigh up the successes and failures of the National Health Service in the United Kingdom and examine the conflicts which have driven the Health Service for over fifty years.

After looking at recent responses to the apparent failure of healthcare in the United Kingdom, they conclude that the NHS has successfully met the challenges it faced when founded over sixty years ago and is likely to continue to meet the changing health needs of the population.

This excellent book is appropriate for a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate students studying health policy and the NHS.

Global Health Governance: International Law and Public Health in a Divided World

Global Health Governance: International Law and Public Health in a Divided World
by Obijiofor Aginam

Buy new: $71.00 $48.15
6 used & new from $48.14

(Visit the Most Wished For in Health Law list for authoritative information on this product's current rank.)

Review & Description

Globalization has immersed all of humanity in a single germ pool. There are no health sanctuaries in a globalizing world. InGlobal Health Governance, Obijiofor Aginam explores the relevance of international law in contemporary public health diplomacy. He focuses on the concept of mutual vulnerability to explore the globalization of disease, in what is paradoxically a global village and a divided world.

Drawing from a wide range of disciplines, Global Health Governance offers a holistic approach to global health governance involving a multiplicity of actors: nation-states, international organizations, civil society organizations, and private actors. Aginam articulates modest proposals under the rubric of communitarian globalism, a paradigm that strives to meet the ideals of 'law of humanity.' These proposals project a humane global health order where all of humanity is inexorably tied into a global compact and where the health of one nation-state rises and falls with the health of others.

International law—with its bold claims to universal protection of human rights and human dignity—is an indispensable governance tool for the reconstruction of damaged public health trust in the relations of nations and peoples.

The Modern Military and the Environment: The Laws of Peace and War

The Modern Military and the Environment
The Modern Military and the Environment: The Laws of Peace and War
by William A., Jr. Wilcox

Buy new: $72.00
30 used & new from $7.86

(Visit the Best Sellers in Health Law list for authoritative information on this product's current rank.)

Review & Description

The battle is an old one: man versus nature. And in modern society, man includes the military. Machines. Chemicals. Who wins the battle and at what cost? This practical analysis of the conflict between national security requirements and environmental responsibility looks at just that.
William Wilcox examines the most common environmental issues that the military faces during wartime and peacetime and provides an introduction to the legal authorities, including statutes, regulations, and executive orders, governing the application of environmental law to military activities.
It also illuminates the tension between environmentalists and regulators concerned with the damages that military development, testing, and training operations inflict on the environment and military leaders dedicated to using actual field conditions to prepare soldiers for war. In addition, this book addresses environmentalists' desire for greater accountability from the military, which has a history of dumping, spilling, stockpiling, and launching harmful chemicals.
Although some exemptions from environmental compliance have been granted to the military, federal agencies are sometimes held to higher standards than private sector companies. Wilcox, an experienced environmental attorney and former military attorney, focuses on the legal framework in which environmental issues are addressed and examines how policy translates into legal application. He also examines the changing relationship between the military and the environment by exploring environmental law as it applies to the military domestically and the impact of international environmental law on combat operations.
In addition to addressing such environmental laws as the National Environmental Policy Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the author provides an overview of the laws governing access to information concerning the military's impact on the environment.
Other topics covered include civil penalties and sovereign immunity, water rights,
